House Painters in Mount Dennis, Toronto

Mount Dennis is one of the older corners of Toronto's west end. It runs along Eglinton, between the Humber River and the Kitchener rail line, and it grew up around its factories. Kodak ran a camera plant here for almost a century, from 1912 until 2006, and CCM, Moffat Stoves, and Dominion Bridge were all close by. A lot of the housing is the modest worker homes that came with those jobs. Brick semis, frame cottages, and bungalows, most of it built between the 1920s and the 1960s.

That age is the whole job for a painter. Old houses shift and crack. The paint on them has been layered by four or five owners, and under the newer coats there is usually lead. You cannot treat a 1950s bungalow near Dennis Avenue the same way you treat a new build near the Mount Dennis Station towers. We have been painting houses like these for years, so we can tell what is behind the wall before we open a can.

Mount Dennis is also in the middle of a change. The new Mount Dennis Station opened on the Eglinton Crosstown, with the GO train and UP Express running through it, and condos are starting to rise around Eglinton and Weston. At the same time, the old worker homes are getting fixed up one at a time. New owners pulling off the aluminum, opening up the plaster, and finally repainting rooms that have not been touched in twenty years. That mix suits us, because we do both. The century semis that need slow, careful prep, and the newer units that just want clean, sharp coats and a quick turnaround.

Interior and Exterior Painting in Mount Dennis

A paint job on a house this age lives or dies on the prep, and prep is exactly where the cheap quotes fall apart.

Inside, most of these homes still have plaster on the original walls, not drywall. Plaster cracks along the same lines every winter, above the door frames and where the ceiling meets the wall. We cut those cracks open, fill them, and prime the patch so it does not read back through the new paint a month later. The trim is usually solid wood carrying a dozen old coats. We sand it back so the edges look sharp again instead of soft and gummy. Then there is the lead. Most of these streets went up before 1960, so we assume it is in the lower layers before we open a can. No dry sanding. The room gets sealed, the surfaces get prepped wet, and the dust gets cleaned as we go, so nothing is left in the air.

Outside, it is mostly wood and older aluminum siding, with some brick mixed in. The wood takes the beating. Sun on the south wall, rain, and the freeze and thaw that rolls off the Humber valley lift old paint every year. We scrape it back to something solid, spot-prime the bare wood, then paint in a window when it is dry enough to cure. That is why we book most exterior jobs for late spring through early fall. If you want the inside and outside done together, we book it as one job. See our interior painting and exterior painting.

Residential and Commercial Painting in Mount Dennis

Most of our work in Mount Dennis is homes. Whole-house repaints, a single room, a kitchen, a hallway that has taken ten years of scuffs. We also paint the small commercial spaces along Eglinton and Weston Road, the shops, offices, and units above them. For those, we work evenings and weekends so you are not painting around customers, and we keep the odour down with low-VOC paint. Same crew, same prep, whether it is a bungalow or a storefront.

The Painting Services We Offer in Mount Dennis

Painting the walls is one part of it. These are the jobs we handle on a Mount Dennis home, most of them on the same visit.

  • Interior painting

Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and closets, with the plaster prep these older rooms need first. Low-odour paint, so most rooms are back in use the same day.

  • Exterior painting

Wood siding, aluminum, brick, porches, and railings. We wash, scrape, and prime before we paint, because that is the part that makes it last through a Toronto winter.

  • Cabinet painting

We take the doors off, degrease, sand, and spray them, so there are no brush marks. You keep your kitchen and skip the renovation. See cabinet painting.

  • Drywall and plaster repair

Cracks, holes, water stains, and seams that have let go, patched and skimmed flat, then primed so the repair disappears under the colour. See drywall and plaster repair.

  • Deck and fence staining

The wood in west-end backyards greys out fast. We wash it, let it dry, and stain it so it sheds water instead of soaking it up. See deck and fence staining.

  • Wallpaper removal

We score, steam, strip the glue, and skim the wall smooth so it is ready to paint. Common in the older homes and upstairs flats around here.

  • Ceiling painting

Flat, even ceilings with the water stains blocked first. On the wavy plaster ceilings a flat finish hides the small dips instead of lighting them up.

  • Trim, crown molding, and doors

Baseboards, casings, crown, and doors filled, caulked, sanded, and painted with a hard finish that takes daily knocks.

  • Stucco and siding

We clean and prep stucco, aluminum, and vinyl, then use coatings made to move with the surface so they do not crack or peel off.

  • Power washing

Before any exterior paint, we wash off the dirt, chalk, and mildew, so the new coat grabs the surface instead of sitting on top of the grime.

"The exterior painting of our house looks fantastic. The crew was clean, respectful, and completed everything on time."

Why Mount Dennis Homeowners Choose Co Painting

We've painted a lot of old west-end homes

Plaster, wood trim, settled cracks, and pre-1960 paint are our normal week, not a surprise on site. That is the difference between a crew that has painted a hundred old Toronto houses and one that has not.

We prep pre-1960 homes the safe way

Most of Mount Dennis predates 1960, so we treat lead paint as a given. We contain the dust and prep wet, so a repaint does not turn into a problem you cannot see.

You get the price in writing, with no surprises

We look at the actual house, walk you through what it needs, and put the estimate in writing before we start. No vague number, no add-ons at the end.

We are insured, and we stand behind it

100% insured and licensed in Ontario, rated 5.0 across 67 Google reviews, with a three-year warranty on the work. The warranty holds because the prep and the materials are right on every job.

Mount Dennis Painting Questions, Answered

Do you actually paint in Mount Dennis, or just nearby?

We paint in Mount Dennis and right across the west end, from the houses off Weston Road to the streets near the Humber. We come to you.

My place is a 1940s house near Weston Road. Is the lead paint a real problem?

It can be. Homes built before 1960 usually have lead in the older paint, and a lot of Mount Dennis fits that. It is only a problem if someone sands it dry and spreads the dust. We prep those walls wet and keep the room sealed.

Do you paint the bungalows and semis out here, or mostly big jobs?

Those small homes are most of what we do in Mount Dennis. One room or the whole house, inside or out.

The paint on my siding is peeling. Can that be fixed, or does it need replacing?

Usually it can be fixed. Peeling almost always means old paint that never bonded or bare wood taking on water. We scrape it back, prime the raw spots, and repaint. Replacing siding is a last resort.

My plaster walls keep cracking. Will the cracks come back after you paint?

Not if they are prepped right. A crack that is only filled and painted over will open again. We cut it out, fill it properly, and prime the patch, so it stays put.

Can you paint my kitchen cabinets instead of me replacing them?

Yes, and most people are surprised how close it looks to new. We spray them, so there are no brush lines, and it costs a lot less than new cabinets.

When should I book exterior painting?

Late spring through early fall. The paint needs a dry, mild stretch to cure, and Toronto only gives you so many of those. We fill the exterior calendar early, so it helps to call ahead.

Do you clean up, or am I left with the mess?

We clean up every day, not just at the end. Floors and furniture stay covered while we work, and we do a final walk-through with you.

Are you insured?

Yes, fully insured and licensed in Ontario. We can show you the paperwork before we start.

How do I get a price?

Call or fill out the form and we book a free estimate. We look at the house, talk through what you want, and give you the number in person.
